COMMUNICATION ABSTRACTS 1977 - present. Index to articles in communication studies from 160 journals. For earlier article citations, use COMMUNICATION AND MASS MEDIA COMPLETE database and use the print INDEX TO JOURNALS IN COMMUNICATION STUDIES THROUGH 1990 ... / by Ronald J. Matlon and Irene R. Matlon. -- Falls Church, Va. : Speech Communication Assoc, c1975- -- 1974- (known also as the "Matlon Index") . : Mem. Lib. Reference Index Case Room 262 Call No: Z5630 M37. (1990 is the most recent edition) This is a print index to articles in communication periodicals)

COMMUNICATION AND MASS MEDIA COMPLETE. (start dates vary-- indexing for 26 journals goes back to their first issue, some of which were early in the 20th century).(May also access by selected ACADEMIC SEARCH, then the tab "choose databases" at top of screen, then click on COMMUNICATION AND MASS MEDIA COMPLETE.) This database has a mixture of citations and full texts of articles in academic journals in the field. It combines what were formerly two products: CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association (NCA)), and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Pennsylvania State University). The default search looks for the search words in the citation and abstract. To search within the full texts, check off: "expand your search to also search within the full text of articles." Articles from these journals (and others) are available in full text: Feminist Media Studies, Journalism History, Quarterly Journal of Speech, Western Journal of Communication, and Women & Language (but NOTE: many journals "embargo" latest issues for a time period, after which they allow them to be added to the database.)

MLA INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY 1963 - to date (updated quarterly).Indexes 3,000 English language and foreign periodicals as well as books, book chapters, and dissertations. Its subject matter includes critical works on authors, literature, language, linguistics, and folklore.

WOMEN'S STUDIES INTERNATIONAL 1972 - to date; (updated semiannually). A composite of several contributing databases of citations covering women's studies, women's issues, and gender-focused scholarship from throughout the world. It contains more than 540,000 citations (!) to books, book reviews, articles, and reports. More than 2,000 academic, popular, and grassroots periodicals are selectively represented. Most material cited is in English; some in French- Canadian, Spanish, or other languages. There are some links to tables of contents from books and to fulltext material.

For reports of women's speeches from mid-nineteenth century onward, it might be useful to try the Historical New York Times (starts in 1851) and for the Chicago area in particular, the Historical Chicago Tribune. (starts in 1890).

ACADEMIC SEARCH (1984 to date; updated daily) and PROQUEST RESEARCH LIBRARY (1988 to date; updated daily). Both are databases of core academic journals for university collections that provide a mixture of many articles in fulltext, others with abstracts or citations-only. Over 1,000 journals in each are available in fulltext.
